Valentine’s Day Curled Paper backdrop with Photoshop AI!

Valentine’s Day Sessions over the years!

If you know me, you know I love a cute kid’s holiday mini session. This year I found Lauren Samuels’ beautiful Valentine’s photo shoot set up and needed to recreate it. I didn’t do it so well this year, but when I get my studio, I’m so excited to create even better set ups!!!

Edited in Adobe Lightroom and added artificial intelligence in Adobe Photoshop

Whether it’s changing the colors or adding in elements you don’t physically have in person, all parts combined = a fun and beautiful Valentine’s day photoshoot!!!

Without proper lighting or a white wall we had to make a hodge podge set up to hang the white paper backdrop behind this pink paper. I cut out a heart then made large slits and curled the paper backward. Just like Lauren shared, I taped the paper back to the backdrop. My kids loved playing around the paper and I almost had a heart attack after seeing the set up almost get torn. I decided I would not offer this officially to clients, but open it up to some close friends this year.

Photoshop Artificial intelligence “love” balloon

To make this Heart photoshoot perfect for Valentine’s day, it is a must to dress the kids up in Valentine themed colors, hearts and anything revolving around x’s and o’s to make the photos themed! I found these boys their shirts from Target. I bought Stella her heart dress from H&M the previous year. Both places have great prices and the cutest clothing for kids… and adults! Every season both of these stores have holiday themed accessories. I added in some heart hair clips for my daughter Stella and considered buying other heart themed items like lollipops or heart sunglasses, but decided to keep it simple this year!

Other ways you can make this session even more themed would be to

  • Add in heart and “love” letter balloons

  • Add confetti on the floor

  • Have props - like sunglasses or kissing lips

  • Stuffed animals

  • Box of chocolates

  • Add in siblings or best friends

This set up would look best if you have an area in your home where you can have a lot of natural light behind the camera! Within our home we have great natural light, but not enough wall space to take the best images. I would have liked to use our garage space, but that wasn’t an option since we have some items in there we haven’t been able to donate/sell yet.

This year we are having some friend’s over for a Valentine’s day small party and we’ll have this back drop for friend’s and their families to have their own little photoshoot. It always makes it more fun when there’s a cute place to take photos at a party. Last year I did a baby milk bath with roses and a mirror with “xoxo” on it. That was cute and I can never get my little toddler to be a baby again so I am so happy we do photos every year. Here is that blog link. In our home we also installed picture frame wall molding and I was so excited to take photos in front of that wall. I wanted to have hanging roses and that turned out as a fail because the stems were so heavy so the roses slid off of the fish wire string we had. I asked my friends to help set that up with me and it didn’t turn out to be the best so in the future I’ll know what to do differently and hopefully be able to hang roses from the ceiling individually rather than string too many and drape that string on the wall!

Also, another tip, when hosting a get together, plan ahead and prepare everything the day before. I was in my extra healthy eating phase and decided to make homemade pizza dough which took forever since I tripled the batches and my friends ended up making the pizzas while I took photos. This year, I’ll just order pizza and keep it simple hahah. Too much DIY in one day is hard with young kids!

My friends and I struggling to set up last year’s Valentine’s Day photoshoot.

The previous year I did a milk bath with rose petals in the actual bath tub. That was so much fun! There are so many fun ideas out there to make this children’s mini session special and love themed. Here is the Milk bath blog for these two cute cousin girls. When I open my studio by spring I will offer milk bath sessions. So excited for that!!!

Follow me on Instgram and watch my Reel from this photoshoot!

This past weekend my friends and I had an early Valentine’s day party including mini photoshoots. I selected a few photos from our sessions to include here from this year. Again, so looking forward to having designated space for this kind of session in the future!

Discover the Best of the City: 11 Activities for Your Walnut Creek, CA Bucket List

January 22, 2025 by Sarah Ford

Walnut Creek is a city where small-town charm meets big-city perks. Nestled in the San Francisco Bay Area, it offers an ideal blend of outdoor adventures, entertainment, and a warm, welcoming community spirit. From scenic parks and hiking trails to popular shopping districts and top-tier dining, there’s something for everyone here.

Whether you’re looking to purchase a home in Walnut Creekan apartment to rent, or have your eye on a rental home in the city, this guide is packed with everything you need to start your life in The Creek. Here’s your ultimate Walnut Creek bucket list, packed with all the must-see spots and experiences that will add a dash of excitement to your life. Let’s dive in.

1. Escape into nature at Heather Farm Park

Heather Farm Park in Walnut Creek is a 102-acre oasis, ideal for any nature lover. From scenic walking trails and peaceful ponds to beautifully landscaped gardens, it’s the perfect spot for some relaxation in the great outdoors. The park also features tennis courts, a swimming pool, a skate park, and plenty of open space for picnics and recreation. Whether you’re out for a stroll, unwinding by the lake, or playing your favorite sport, this is the perfect spot to recharge and enjoy this beautiful landscape.

After spending the day at Heather Farm, treat yourself to a meal at Tatsu Sushi, conveniently located just a few minutes away. This restaurant stands as a true benchmark of quality. Each piece is expertly crafted, guaranteeing an exceptional dining experience every time. More than just a restaurant, it’s a popular spot to enjoy an impressive variety of Japanese treats that you won’t want to miss.

2. Spend the day at Old Borges Ranch

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rustic charm of Old Borges Ranch, one of Walnut Creek’s best-kept secrets. Tucked into the foothills of Mount Diablo, this historic ranch couples the city’s natural beauty with a glimpse into the area’s agricultural heritage. If you’re drawn to the outdoors or have an interest in history, it’s an unforgettable experience to add to your Walnut Creek bucket list.

“As a family photographer in Walnut Creek, I’m always in awe of the amazing biking opportunities we have. One of my favorites is Old Borges Ranch—especially if you have toddlers or little kids. There is a cute goat farm, and the hiking trails are wide, fairly flat, and safe for all ages,” shares family photographer Jenn Chen from Jenn Chen Photography.

For the best experience, pack a picnic and make a day of it. Wander through the ranch’s historic buildings, meet the friendly farm animals, and explore the grounds to your hearts’ content.

3. Grab your ice skates

When winter rolls around, there’s no better way to embrace the season than by lacing up your skates and hitting the ice. Walnut Creek on Ice, the city’s seasonal ice skating rink, is a beloved gathering spot, offering a festive way to celebrate the colder months. Perfect your spins, laugh through wobbly first steps, or simply soak in the cheerful atmosphere—it’s an unforgettable experience for anyone looking to add a little sparkle to their bucket list.

“One of the things we did as a family was go to the seasonal skating rink and sip hot chocolate or your favorite beverage while watching kids try to gain their balance,” shares the team at the local floral shop, Countrywood Florist. “One of the funniest things is watching parents recapture their youth (me included). As a transplant from New Jersey, I’m not alone in The Creek, and we do show up at the rink. Also, if you’re looking for a real NY pizza in WC, I recommend Pizzalina in Countrywood Center.”

4. Gather for an elegant tea party

Step into a world of charm and sophistication at Pretty Tea Parties and Events, located at 520 Lennon Lane. This unique venue offers an enchanting tea party experience, perfect for creating unforgettable memories. With two private suites to choose from, you’ll find the perfect setting for any occasion.

The main room exudes elegance, with its gold scrollwork, vintage Parisian style furniture, Chinese vases, Italian marquetry tea carts, and a fireplace adorned with matching candelabras. This space, seating up to 40 guests, feels like stepping into a Bridgerton-inspired dream—classic, floral, and regal. For a more intimate gathering, the Woodland Room seats up to 11 guests and offers a cozy, nature-inspired setting. With a small bridge and trees embracing the room, it’s like enjoying an upscale event in the heart of the forest—minus the bugs. This space provides the perfect backdrop for baby showers, bridal showers, receptions, fund raising, birthdays, book clubs, client appreciation, and all of life’s celebrations.

5. Indulge in a shopping spree at Broadway Plaza

If shopping is your idea of the perfect day out, Broadway Plaza is an essential stop to add to your Walnut Creek bucket list. This upscale, open-air shopping center offers a luxurious yet inviting experience, combining high-end stores, charming boutiques, and top-notch dining options. Whether you’re splurging on a shopping spree or simply taking in the lively ambiance, Broadway Plaza promises a memorable outing for anyone looking to explore the heart of Walnut Creek’s retail scene.

“One of my favorite spots in Walnut Creek is Broadway Plaza. With its open-air design, beautiful landscaping, and a mix of luxury stores and favorites like Anthropologie or Madewell, it’s the perfect place to shop, dine, or enjoy the atmosphere,” shares photographer Athena Joyce from Athena Galgiani Photography. “Broadway Plaza offers a plethora of activities and attracts a great crowd, making it a must-do activity whether you’re running errands or indulging in some leisure time.”

After a full day of shopping, treat yourself to an exceptional dining experience at BH Wood-Fired Grill. Located just minutes from the plaza, this refined restaurant combines a sophisticated ambiance with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Signature dishes like the Steakhouse Wedge Salad, Prime Rib French Dip, and Mt. Lassen Trout pair beautifully with their curated selection of California wines and artfully crafted cocktails. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and savor the vibrant charm that defines Walnut Creek.

6. Spend the day bowling at Pinstripes

Looking for a fun and unique thing to do in Walnut CreekPinstripes, the city’s upscale bowling alley, is the perfect spot for a memorable outing. This modern venue combines bowling with bocce, delicious food, and a stylish atmosphere. With a full-service bistro and bar, you can also enjoy handcrafted cocktails and dishes while taking a break between games.

After your game, don’t miss the chance to explore nearby local favorites like Walnut Creek institution Sunrise Bistro for their breakfast burrito or a hearty ham and cheese croissant. Then, get a hand-whisked matcha latte just around the corner at Third Culture Bakery. It’s the perfect way to create a quintessential Walnut Creek day.

7. Explore Walnut Creek’s Trails

The city’s trails are a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering scenic routes through rolling hills, shaded creeks, and panoramic viewpoints. From the beginner-friendly Iron Horse Trail to the challenging hikes at Mount Diablo State Park, there’s a perfect hike for every skill level. Ideal for walking, running, biking, and with year-round accessibility, Walnut Creek’s trails provide a peaceful escape just minutes from the city.

“If you’re new to the area, I highly recommend exploring Walnut Creek’s incredible trail system, including the Iron Horse and Contra Costa Canal Trails,” says Emily Woodall, a local family photographer from Emily Woodall Photography. “These well-maintained paths can take you all over the city and even connect you to Pleasant HillConcordSan Ramon, and Danville. The trails offer a fun way to get to know the area while taking in Walnut Creek’s beautiful scenery. It’s a great way to stay active and experience all that this city has to offer.”

From high-intensity interval training to yoga, Pilates, and dance, you’re sure to find a class that fits your routine. Beyond helping you achieve your fitness goals, these classes offer a great chance to connect with others and build a sense of community.

For those drawn to the beauty and grace of classical dance, the Contra Costa Ballet Center is a top-tier destination in Walnut Creek. As the premier classical ballet school in the East Bay, it provides world-class instruction, guiding students from their first steps in music and movement through seven progressive levels of achievement. Along the way, students build proficiency, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts, all while laying a strong foundation for future success.

Additionally, the Contra Costa Ballet Center is celebrated for its remarkable performances. Each year, the Contra Costa Ballet Foundation produces two highly anticipated shows—the beloved Nutcracker and the Spring Repertory. The Nutcracker attracts over 4,500 attendees each year, while the Spring Repertory features classical works like Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, along with contemporary performances such as Alice in Wonderland. These productions not only highlight the talent of the ballet school’s students, but also offer unique opportunities to perform alongside professional dancers at the prestigious Lesher Center for the Arts.

Fitness boot camp at Gumsaba

Looking for an invigorating outdoor fitness experience? Gumsaba Boot Camp offers a fantastic option for newcomers. Proudly serving the East Bay since 2010, these classes are rain or shine and cater to all fitness levels. Their team of highly educated coaches are ready to cheer you on, and the Gumsabacommunity is supportive and welcoming. As they say, it’s the hardest hour you’ll ever love.

In-Home Newborn or baby Lifestyle Session

Mini in home Lifestyle session for 3 month old baby Liam

I received a text from one of my friends asking if I could take photos of her 3 month old baby and I replied, “of course"!” She said she wanted to remember her third son’s baby toes, fingers, smiles and all the details. I thought it was a wonderful idea. Many people opt to take newborn photos, but let’s be honest, 3 month photos are pretty dang cute too. This is the age when babies come to life showing more of their personality. They are too cute. I love that. We met just two weeks later in Lafayette, California on a bright and sunny morning!

I love the idea of taking photos in my client’s home because it is such an intimate and personal setting. It’s sweet to bring details into the photo that are unique to that family. I love looking back at my own photos from various places in my house and seeing how much things have changed or reminiscing on how things had been back then. To make this session memorable I recommend the following:

  • Dress baby in your favorite outfit- choose light colors or outfits that reflect you and your style.

  • Select comfortable neutral and light colored clothing for yourselves as well to have a cohesive look.

  • When possible, I prefer to take photos in rooms with a lot of natural light. Let’s set up in the room with backlight from a window! It would be so sweet to capture photos in the nursery as well.

  • Bring your other family members. Whether it be the grandparents, siblings or your partner, I love taking photos of baby with loved ones.

  • Include any props, or blankets that have special meaning to you.

  • Print your photos to frame or order a memory photo album.

I have a print shop you can order photos from or you can create a high quality professional photo album elsewhere as well. Within your online photo collection, you will find my storefront for multiple options!

Something I love about taking lifestyle photos is that they capture every day life. This is your home, your sacred space. It’s not only convenient for me to come to you, but to capture your life in still motion is so beautiful. From newborn, to baby milestones, like cake smashes or holiday mini sessions, you will not regret taking professional photos that highlight your child’s precious moments through time.

Lifestyle sessions are unique in that they tell your story. I will direct you to interact and pose on occasion for the camera, but what this session is about is documenting various stages of life. I’ll want you to feel comfortable and natural in your home. Lifestyle photography sessions do not only need to be for new babies, but can be taken for other seasons of life like for maternity photos, anniversaries and senior portraits. Some clients of mine have lovely backyards or front yards that they want to remember. I took photos of a family in San Jose once at their gorgeous home near Willow Glen. The children were about 5 and 3 years old and their mom wanted to take professional photos of her kids sitting on their tree swing in the front yard swing since they had done that a year or two previously. We recreated it and the family loved their photos. They are some of my returning clients as well. :)

Capturing those “in between moments” often go unnoticed, but those are the small parts that make all of the big parts of life so beautiful. That mom that feels like a taxi driver for her kids, that dad who spends so much time preparing the kids for bedtime or that time when the kids gathered at the kitchen island to “make” their own pizzas… These small things make a house a home.

I offer both full and mini sessions depending on the number of people who will be in the session or the goal of the session. This recent session I took photos at was only a mini session. My friend simply wanted to capture a handful of photos of her 3 month old baby with all of his details that she didn’t capture when she was postpartum along with a few of the siblings together. Although I could’ve offered her only what she asked for, I suggested a few other positions and combinations to make sure we didn’t miss out on anything!

I’ve taken many photos for my friends. It is such an honor when close friends and families book a session with me and keep coming back for more! I love what I do and love the people who I work with. Photography is such an art and a lot of people photography starts with being comfortable with people and being able to get them to feel comfortable as well.

I look forward to working with you if I haven’t already and capturing some unforgettable moments-the way you want them remembered!

Kind Words

Athena was amazing with my family! As a mother herself, she understood how to make my very shy 2 year old feel comfortable with an authentic smile and was able to capture the short moments of happiness from my cranky 4 month old! She picked the most beautiful spot for a late fall photoshoot at Lafayette Reservoir. She was on time, calm through our chaos, directed us, and was honest with poses that didn’t look good, which I very much appreciated. We received our photos quickly and were given different edit options. These photos turned out so beautifully and they have captured a special moment in our life that will forever be framed in our house. I highly recommend her as your professional photographer!
— Amanda Z
Athena was great to work with! She made us feel at ease, and she was very patient with our “strong-willed” 3 year old. Even with our daughter’s refusal to participate, she was still able to capture some beautiful pictures! :)
— Caitlin O
We are so happy to have chosen Athena to be our photographer for both our maternity photoshoot and newborn photoshoot. Athena arrived promptly and is very easy going. She asks about what you like and gets your input and makes sure the outcome is what you had envisioned. She asks you to bring props you would like to use in the photoshoot and knows how to incorporate them in. She is very detail-oriented during the photoshoot. For instance, she has an eye to spot a piece of fuzz on your dress or a small strand of hair out of place.

Our newborn was shedding his first layer of his skin at the time we scheduled his photoshoot. Athena was very understanding and allowed us to postpone the photoshoot not once but twice to allow time for his skin to heal. And did I mention that the photos turned out amazing! More lovely than I had envisioned. She tells you that the turnaround time is a week for the photos but she had it ready way before that. Will definitely be using her for all our family photoshoots in the future! Thank you, Athena! You are so talented and skillful at what you do! Cannot wait for our next session in the future.
— Carmen Y
Athena is a true professional in her field. She knows exactly how to find the perfect angle, perfect setting and capturing great expressions. Awesome to work with. She was able to make my daughter feel comfortable and confident and the results are beautiful and amazing senior portraits. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a great photographer.

The Ultimate guide to your couples or engagement photoshoot in the San Francisco Bay Area

Capturing love stories is one of my favorite things as a photographer! I believe every couple has a special story to tell and my goal is to capture your authentic relationship while prompting, posing and getting you to interact for beautiful photos. To help you prepare for your session, here’s a complete guide on what to expect, how to dress, and how to prepare for memories that you’ll cherish forever.

1. What to Expect During Your Session

When you book a session with me, you can look forward to an experience that feels relaxed and fun. We’ll spend about an hour together, usually during the golden hour before sunset, for the best natural light. I love using simple, natural settings around the San Francisco Bay Area as backdrops to create timeless, earthy-toned photos that focus on you. My goal is to capture candid, genuine moments, so we’ll focus more on interacting and connecting as I direct you with what to do.

Locations

From scenic coastal cliffs to golden or lush hills, we’re surrounded by breathtaking views in the Bay Area. Whether it’s a quiet beach at Half Moon Bay, the serene redwood forests in Berkeley, coastal views in Marin or the Golden Gate Bridge, I’ll work with you to find the perfect spot that fits your story and vision.

2. How to Prepare for Your Session

Preparing for a photoshoot can be exciting and a little nerve-wracking, so here are some tips to make sure you’re all set for the day:

Rest up: Get a good night’s sleep and keep the day of the shoot as low-key as possible. Feeling rested helps you look fresh, relaxed, and ready to enjoy your time.

Bring props or personal items: If there’s something meaningful to you both, like a shared hobby or special memento, feel free to bring it along. It can add a personal touch to your photos.

Be open: Photoshoots are about embracing your connection and being present in the moment. Be mindful of your “good side” and from there you can trust me to position and direct you through various prompts.

3. What to Wear: Outfit Tips for Stunning Photos

Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in how your photos turn out. Here are some style tips to keep you looking and feeling your best:

Go for neutral, earthy tones: Colors like tans, soft greens, creams, whites and muted blues or greens work beautifully with the SF Bay Area’s natural landscapes and create a timeless look.

Coordinate, don’t match: Instead of dressing in identical colors, pick a color palette and choose clothes in different shades or complementary colors. This gives a cohesive look without matching.

Choose timeless over trendy: Go for outfits that feel like you, but will also look great years from now. Avoid logos or very busy patterns that can distract from your faces.

Layer for texture: Layers like jackets, or cardigans, can add depth, and make you stand out in your photos.

For Her

• Flowy dresses or skirts: Dresses with a bit of flow or movement look so pretty in photos. Whites, earthy or deep colors are perfect, and a simple pattern or solid color to keep it timeless.

• Keep accessories simple: A little jewelry, like a delicate necklace or bracelet, can look great. If you want a statement piece, stick to just one so it doesn’t take over the look.

For Him

• Casual button-downs: A nice button-down shirt in a solid color or soft pattern works great. Shades like blues, grays, or greens feel relaxed but still put-together. A chambray or linen shirt can add some texture, too.

• Chinos or slacks: Lighter pants like tan or beige look good with light or neutral-toned tops and are more polished than shorts.

• Jackets or sweaters (weather permitting): A denim jacket, blazer, or pullover adds a nice layer without making things too formal. Earthy tones or darker shades like olive or charcoal look nice too.

• Minimal accessories: Keep it simple with maybe a watch or bracelet—just enough to add some style without taking focus off you two.

4. Get Ready to Relax and Enjoy the Moment

Your photo session is a time to celebrate your relationship and capture the love you share. I want you to enjoy every moment, laugh together, and even forget there’s a camera involved! Here are a few reminders to help you get in the right mindset:

Focus on each other: These photos are about you two and the connection you share. I’ll guide you through moments that bring out genuine laughter, sweet glances, and tender moments.

Trust the process: Every couple is unique, and I’m here to create images that reflect your relationship, quirks and all. Even if you feel a bit awkward at first, trust that the magic will come through.

Enjoy the experience: Think of this as a fun date! Explore a new location, laugh together, and embrace the little moments in between. The best photos are often the ones captured when you’re just enjoying each other’s company.

5. Final Thoughts: What Makes a Bay Area Session Special

There’s something incredible about the San Francisco Bay Area that invites such a variety of people to come here . Whether it’s the dreamy coastal views, golden hills, or the city’s vibrant tourist sites, your photos will be outstanding if you work with me. As a photographer who loves capturing love and emotion in people, I can promise you a session that feels personal and images that will amaze you and everyone else also.

Winnie the Pooh Cake Smash

1st birthday Winnie the Pooh (with generative AI)

Setting up this Winnie the Pooh cake smash was so fun! There are real Disney stuffed animals along with a real cake. I decided to make my own smash cake for this session since it would get destroyed as I’ve seen in the past. I made a naked cake to keep it simple and sophisticated. To my surprise, Cal didn’t know what to do when I placed the cake in front of him. He didn’t want to even touch it. When we finally put some of the frosting into his mouth, he looked like he wanted to gag. So funny.

Baby's 1st cake smash photos

As a family, we all went to Hidden Lakes in Martinez for the session. My kids played on the playground while I set up the picnic blanket, stuffed animals, book, cake and helium-filled red balloon. I’m sure I could have photoshopped or used generative artificial intelligence to add in these details, but I wanted to have some real elements to engage Callahan for the session. Later on at home I edited the images in lightroom. Afterward I photoshopped the “hundred acre wood” writing onto a wooden sign using generative ai in the photo. I thought it would be cute to add in some honey bees as well. I attempted adding in a tree house. I thought about putting owl there too, but decided not to! I took some cute photos without my handmade smash cake and later added in a photo of a cake slice. I also added in a jar of honey.

My inspiration for this cake smash came from the digital art I created for Callahan’s nursery before he was born. Since my husband went to UC Berkeley

I absolutely love taking baby’s first birthday cake smash photos. Let me be a part of your special milestone and have me take your baby’s cake smash photos either in the forest or in another set up you love!

Valentine's Day baby Milk bath with Roses + XOXO mirror

Years ago when my daughter Stella was about 18 months old I set up a Valentine’s day milk bath for her and her cousin Siena in the bathroom bath. Strawberries were sold out so I put red rose petals in the bath tub and surrounded the area with candles. Check out that post here.

If you know me, I’m a fan of baby milk baths so I had to do one for my third child, baby Callahan! I invited his girlfriend over and we did a milk bath for her too. :) It was so fun

Baby Milk Bath with roses and red lipstick kiss on the cheek

Valentine’s day milk bath with red roses

Callahan seems to have sensitive skin because after kissing him with red lipstick on my lips and putting him in the milk, his eyes got a little puffy and his legs were turning red. Not all babies react to milk baths this way, but mine did so I washed him off right after I snapped a few photos! Boy did Callahan splash a lot. It got messy fast and thankfully I had some helpers (my now 4.5 year old daughter and 2.5 year old boy) there to help. It’s always best to have some help with this kind of photoshoot!

XOXO + kiss marks antique mirror with baby

I saw some cute photos online of mirrors with the reflection of a person writing on a mirror with lipstick and thought I’d turn this into a creative photoshoot. There should be a song about California babies are irresistible by Katie Perry because as you can see here, this bay area baby is the cutest boy in town. He’s got XOXO written all over him.

Contact me if you’d like to set a milk bath up for your baby, or yourself in a lifesize bathroom bathtub. Those are so much fun too!

Family Session Style Guide

What to wear and how to prepare for our session

I’m so excited to take photos together! Thank you for choosing me to capture your family photos! I’m looking forward to meeting you and having fun all while photographing some posed and candid looks!

Leading up to a family photography session, the most challenging part can be deciding what to wear. I’ve created this guide to help take the stress out of the process, and let you know what kinds of outfits work the best for just the right look. If you have any questions after reading this, just let me know!

YOUR SESSION

LOCATION

The San Francisco bay area offers some of the best scenery around. There are the green or dry grassy hills (depending on the season), ocean, forests and iconic places like the Golden Gate Bridge or Palace of Fine arts. When planning for the location, think of places that fit your family and are accessible for everyone who is involved. Depending on the scenery, your photos may look darker if there are many trees or greenery in the background compared to open air, dry grass or the ocean. Also, keep in mind that there are travel fees outside of the east bay- Martinez or Walnut Creek area!

WHAT TO BRING

Water, snacks, or toys. Anything to keep everyone happy. Ladies may need make up for touch ups. Four legged friends are more than welcome, if they play nice ;), and if our location allows for pets! If it’s chilly outside, you may want to wear a cute and light jacket. Having props can be fun sometimes too!

TIMING

When photographing outside, I try to schedule the session 1 hour prior to sunset as this is known as golden hour, or the best timing for soft and even lighting. If the evening, depending on the time of the year, doesn’t work due to naps and meal times etc., we can work out another time that’s best for you. In these cases, we would seek out a place that has a lot of shade if we are outdoors.

PREPARATION

To avoid last minute stress, make sure to pick out all outfits and props in advance. If your outfits are new make sure your kids wear them a couple times before the photoshoot to make sure they are comfortable and willing to wear them.

5 WARDROBE TIPS

  1. Don’t match, coordinate. Pick a color palette for your family to work within. We don’t want everyone to match perfectly or for everyone to wear a single color, but we also don’t want everyone wearing too many different colors and clashing patterns.

  2. Don’t be too seasonal. While the idea of outfits for the season may be appealing, our aim is to produce photos that you can display in your home year round! Unless you live on the north pole, Christmas only really works once a year. ;)

  3. Avoid patterns. Go for earth tones, textures and solid colors. These are the most classic and timeless and will guarantee your outfits are still in style years from now- rather than a trend! It’s also best to aim for layers in your clothing for visual appeal and movement (especially for the ladies! Dresses or a flowy cardigan, etc.).

  4. Fitted = best. While flowy articles of clothing for the girls is fantastic, in general aim for fitted clothing for the guys. Avoid baggy jeans and too loose of shirts, etc.. The same can go for too tight of shirts and dresses where we can see the fabric hugging too tight on stomachs.

  5. We want your session to be fun and enjoyable for everyone involved. If your kid’s clothing is uncomfortable for them to wear, it won’t be nearly as fun. If you’re planning outfits outside of what they are used to, I’d suggest “breaking them in” a few days in advance to get them used to the feeling of wearing those clothes and to make sure they are the right size.

AIM FOR

Muted tones

Complementary colors

Layers and movement

Avoid busy patterns

AVOID

Avoid bright colors

matching outfits

busy patterns

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS

Your clothing selection and choice of location will make the biggest difference in the final feel and look of your photos. Feel free to email me questions regarding different outfit choices and what will look best.

FAQ’S

WHAT IS YOUR SHOOTING STYLE FOR FAMILY PHOTOS?

I am a portrait and lifestyle photographer and my style is geared towards capturing real moments! This means getting you interactive and having a fun time together - because that’s where the magic happens. Additionally, I know everyone wants those posed photos where everyone is smiling and looking right at the camera. We’ll get those too!

WHAT IF MY KIDS WON’T ENGAGE?

That’s ok! Many kids are shy or have a hard time with posing for photos - which is why we forget the posing and just get you playing and loving on each other. You just enjoy the moment and I’ll take care of getting the best photos.

CAN I CANCEL OR RESCHEDULE MY SESSION?

Booking deposits are non-refundable as I am holding the date for you and turning away other clients. If you need to reschedule, I’ll need at least 48 hours notice and we will most likely need to book on a weekday due to availability. If the weather forecast shows severe weather conditions like heavy rain or too much smoke from fires, we can reschedule!

ARE SESSIONS INDOORS OR OUTDOORS?

Although I prefer to take sessions outdoors, all session locations are chosen by you, to bring your unique vision to life. Indoors or outdoors - we’ll make it happen!

HOW LONG IS THE TYPICAL PHOTOSHOOT?

The typical session is one hour and additionally I offer mini sessions which are 30 minutes and mostly for little ones who are restless! If more time is needed due to having more than two families present, I’d recommend a 1.5 hour photoshoot.

WHEN IS MY PAYMENT DUE?

Your 30% retainer deposit is required to reserve your date. The remainder of your balance can be paid within a couple days of your session. Photos will not be edited and shared until the full payment has been made.

WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?

Venmo or Paypal (as a friend), cash or credit card with a 3% fee. My venmo username is @Athena-Galgiani and the last four digits of my phone number are 8225. My paypal username is @AthenaGalgiani

THANK YOU FOR READING THIS AND GETTING PREPARED FOR YOUR SESSION. :)

I’M EXCITED TO MEET YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!

Popsicles by the Poolside

A reenactment of my second child taking photos with his friend by the pool.

Three years ago my friend Jessica and I took photos of our kids in bathing suits with a rainbow/cloud pool and popsicles in their hands. Fast forward to now and you’ll see that we have a second child who is two years old. Stella was a 1 year old when she got her photos taken the first time. My second child, Luke, is two years old and Stella is 4 years old today. Our first photoshoot was so cute that I had to recreate it with one of my friend’s daughter and my son.

The chairs we have for the kids are from Target and we originally bought the little rainbow/cloud pool from Target as well. I gave the kids “Outshine” popsicles and love those especially because they have no sugar options!

This summer theme with wearing cute swimsuits is the perfect, simple photoshoot for kids! I LOVE the candid style here. Although this was all staged by me, I took candid photos along with posed photos of the kids sitting and smiling. Oh and those sunglasses! If you can add in any accessories that will make the session even more cute!

Big Sur River Gorge Maternity Photos

At 36 weeks pregnant I traveled to the River Gorge at Big Sur to take maternity photos of Audrianna at 31 weeks pregnant. The photoshoot went perfectly and neither of us went into labor and delivery. ;)

River Gorge @ Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

I’ve been sooooo so excited for this photoshoot at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park for months! So if you haven’t heard, I’m pregnant as well and when planning this maternity photoshoot with Audrianna, I was a little worried about being able to take her photos. When planning I was only 5 months pregnant or so and concerned by 36 weeks pregnant I’d be too heavy to move around, tired or may go into labor by that point. Well, that was one week ago and I haven’t had my baby yet! This will be my 3rd baby. I’m so excited to meet our baby boy.

Audrianna will be having a baby boy as well with her partner Miguel! I met Audrianna about 3 years ago at her father’s beach wedding. I took his and his wife’s photos at their ceremony, and then family portraits and couple portraits. I absolutely loved their wedding day at Carmel-by-the Sea.

The vision for this maternity session at Big Sur River Gorge was to play in the water and have a variety of candid and posed photos showcasing Audrianna’s cute baby bump. She was 31 weeks pregnant at the time, which is perfect timing when taking maternity photos. Check out my blog post to read more about preparing for a maternity session here!

We took photos by the shore first and afterward Audrianna changed her top for a more intimate look in the river. I’m personally a huge fan of bralettes when taking maternity photos. The human body is so amazing and the fact that a woman can grow a little person is something incredible to me. Showing as much of that bump and the reality of what women carry while laboring through pregnancy becomes more of a reality when that bump is exposed.

The session was a ton of fun. We tried out a variety of looks with my direction and safely traveled in and out of the river at Big Sur with the both of us pregnant ladies getting out safely! ;) I highly recommend taking maternity photos at a special location for you and I would love to return to Big Sur for a maternity photoshoot session if you are interested!

San Francisco City Hall Civil Marriage Ceremony with Athena

Reserve your San Francisco City Hall elopement with Athena! If you need help preparing for your wedding day, here is some information and resources to consider. As a wedding and elopement photographer, Athena can capture your epic moments spontaneously and coordinate with you as well. From details to wide angle perspective shots you will be amazed with the photos you will receive after your photography session.

San Francisco City Hall Wedding Couple

Photographing civil marriage ceremonies at San Francisco City Hall are honestly my favorite! I love taking traditional wedding photos at various venues in the bay area, but there is something magical about San Francisco’s City Hall here in California. The lush gold accents, marble walls and floors and etched wood work are stunning. I feel like I’m in a palace amongst my clients, your royalty, when I’m here. :)

If you are hoping to get married indoors in San Francisco, I highly recommend reserving a ceremony appointment at SF city hall. I want to share some options you’ll have if eloping in San Francisco. As a wedding and elopement photographer, I hope I can help make your wedding day dreams come true!

Whether you are considering having a wedding with up to 100 people, a private wedding in the private ceremony room or having up to 6 people view your marriage ceremony on the rotunda at city hall, there are multiple options to choose from to make your wedding day ideal. All you need to do is reserve a 15 minute appointment with the deputy marriage commissioner at SF city hall at least 90 days in advance. Make sure you have already made plans to get your marriage license before your ceremony as well as have that document for the day of! The process to get married in San Francisco is pretty simple. You can find more information here to prepare for your wedding day!

As your wedding, elopement, or engagement photographer, I know the best spots to take photos at for both your ceremony and couple portraits within City Hall and outside by those beautiful golden rimmed glass doors. We will take a variety of photos ranging from directed candid photos to portraits. I like to get detail shots and perspective shots as well. Our minimum time together will include photos at the ceremony and about 30 minutes of images after. For the minimum time frame, we would arrange for the 1 hour photoshoot. If you would like to have even more photos of your special day, we can extend the time to take photos at City Hall, and/or drive to other locations in the area. I personally like the idea of taking additional photos in some iconic spots nearby like having the Golden Gate Bridge in the background or the Palace of Fine Arts for example.

My minimum session fee including my travel to SF is $575 as your elopement photographer. You’ll get 65 Fully edited high resolution digital images (with the option to have your images without my signature preset), access to download and share a private online gallery, and the print release. Please click the links below if you’d like to look at my pricing in detail or if you’d like to get in contact with me to reserve me as your wedding day photographer!

Briones Regional Park Portrait Photography

Let’s take photos at Briones East Bay Regional Park in Martinez!

Senior Portraits with American Flag at Briones, Contra Costa County

One of the biggest hidden gems in the San Francisco Bay area is Briones. As I’m writing this, I’ve been wondering how this 6,117 acre open space preserve has been kept so pristine. Briones covers Lafayette, Martinez, Walnut Creek, and Pleasant Hill, California. All of these cities are a part of Contra Costa County and offer amazing routes for anyone who enjoys hiking.

As a native to the area, I know these hills well and enjoy hiking to see the panoramic views of Mount Diablo, the Diablo valley to the east, the Sacramento River to the North and the Berkeley Hills/Mount Tamalpais to the west. Briones hosts a variety of animals and birds such as turkey vultures, black-tailed deer, cougars, coyotes, squirrels and red tailed hawks. There are also cattle, sheep and goat ranchers on the land. Also good to know, this east bay regional park is dog friendly! Feel free to bring your pet to our photoshoot! One of my goals in the future is to be able to own a horse and take my horse on walks in the Briones hills. :)

Senior Portraits at Briones Regional Park, Martinez, California (Spring Photography)

Here are some photos of a College Park High School Senior I took in the Spring Season. Thankfully we caught the flowers while they were in bloom for our portrait photography session and with the green grass and sun set, the landscape was beyond beautiful. I’ve also taken many portraits at Briones with the dry golden Hills grass. I’ll share some photos below as well.

Briones Regional Park Portrait Photography

When meeting for a portrait session I usually meet clients before sunset to catch the perfect golden light you’ll see in most of my images. I’ve attached some images I took of a family at Briones. They have a baby girl and because nap times and sleep don’t always work out time-wise, I met this sweet family around noon at Briones. I love the late summer nights, but that can also be a challenge when little kids have bedtimes before 8pm!

Walnut Creek Family Photos- School is OUT!

This has been one of my favorite sessions in Walnut Creek, California! School is out, the sun sets late and if you have some older kids, then a summer family photo session is one of the best ways you can remember this past year in the bay area!

I had a mini session with this family of 6 and captured just enough photos to make for a nice collection, but not TOO many where the teenagers were over it! I took individual portraits of the kids and nice couple photos of the parents. We have a variety of candid and posed photos. These photos are going to look SO nice when printed and hung up on display in the Garcia house hold!

Many people have been asking me, “where should we print our photos?” and although I have a high quality print shop, Walmart photo and specifically using the Photo print plus app works great for poster size photos and other prints. The quality of the 4x6 and 5x7 are nice, but sometimes the details don’t print perfectly. I know it can be pricey paying for a photoshoot session and then ordering images so if you have a tighter budget then I recommend Walmart Photos! There’s of course shutterfly and other online web services that offer prints, but with shipping and their base rate, the fees with Walmart are better!

McFarland Living History Ranch Wedding, Galt, Sacramento, California

This has been one of the best weddings this year! I met Emilio and Anisa last year while taking their engagement photos at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. They were such a friendly and easy to couple to work with. When Anisa asked me to be their wedding photographer, I couldn’t say no! They were supposed to have their wedding ceremony and reception in Sacramento, but their venue was switched because they changed the date of their event later on. I’m grateful I was available for their new wedding date!

The McFarland History Ranch in Galt, California is beautiful! I really enjoyed taking photos there. I shared my wedding planning guide with the couple and I’m so glad it worked out for us to take photos with ideal light during the whole day! Thankfully they had planned to take some sunset couple photos. The light was beyond amazing for that! I love when I can catch golden light beaming from behind a couple at just the right angle.

While getting ready, I was able to capture some photos of Anisa getting her makeup done, fixing her hair and getting her dress all set. I love when we take getting ready photos since it can be time for me to check in the bride, take photos of extra details and capture the beauty of all the effort it takes to get ready for the big day!

The ceremony was held outside of the ranch house. I LOVED those bright, yet deep dark green doors right behind the officiant. The wedding party was pretty large; full of family and friends. I was expecting at least 15 minutes for their ceremony, especially because that’s what they mentioned, but I swear it was maybe 8 minutes maximum and I was caught off guard. Thankfully I still took amazing photos of everything!

Next, the couples walked out to their recepetion with introductions. It’s nice to get to know the wedding party too! There was a nice Mexican meal after that, drinks were served and everybody just hung out waiting for the wedding events to begin.

My favorite part of the day was taking the couple’s photos by the ranch. There were beautiful sheep roaming in the background behind the fence. The trees were perfectly shaped and spaced out nicely. The sunsetting in the Sacramento area was brilliant and golden. Everything was so beautiful.

Tips for Taking High School Senior Portraits!

Getting ready for graduation? Taking senior portraits is a great way to remember your senior year of high school! I don’t take Senior portraits often, but when I do, they are so much fun! Our local high school is College Park in Pleasant Hill. I actually went to school there! I wish I got professional senior portraits here in California back when I was a senior! I remember taking portraits at a studio that I used for my yearbook, but I wish it was more of a thing to take outdoor senior portraits back then!

First things first, choose a photographer you love and who knows what they are doing! Many people are finding senior photographers on a Google search, yelp, Thumbtack, or Instagram. Check out their work, like mine ;) and see if they’re the right fit. Is their style, coloring and portraits what matches your style? Images will vary by location and the season of the year, but generally, the coloring and style of the photos will be the same.

Choose some outfits that you feel confident in! Make sure they are in trend with the current styles and coloring. That way they will reflect the time of your high school year. Also consider wearing outfits that are timeless. For example, mom jeans are cool, but maybe not for a senior portrait session. I always recommend wearing a flowing dress that has neutral colors, and an outfit that is casual like jeans a blouse and cardigan for another look. Always wear trendy accessories like bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Do your hair and makeup as well. Maybe even get a manicure and pedicure!

If you’re a guy, maybe get a fresh haircut, but get one at least one week in advance in case anything goes wrong! Wear a more formal outfit and a casual outfit as well! You can wear accessories as well. Watches are nice shoes are always attractive You want to look your absolute best and that will help you feel your best when taking photos.

Get to know yourself. What side of your face and body do you prefer to feature? Do you like photos where you are standing up or sitting down better? Are there any props that you prefer to bring to our photoshoot that reflect who you are? For example, if you are a cheerleader, maybe bring a trophy, or pom poms. If you play the flute, bring your flute! I’ve seen some seniors take portraits with an American flag. What a cute idea! Bring something that you’d like to remember and it will make you feel more comfortable having somewhere to put your hands.😜 Practice a variety of smiles and poses to see what looks best on you!

If you invited a friend or family member to your session maybe they will have some ideas to help you out as well. It’s helpful to have someone hold your props, bags and supplies etc.. You may want to bring a water bottle if we are hiking, your lipstick to reapply your makeup, an extra pair of shoes and something like tissues just in case you need them! You know yourself best and what you’ll need to be comfortable and confident for your senior portraits here in the SF bay area!

Let me know what you are liking and not liking while taking photos with me! I want to make this session all about you and get you some images that you absolutely LOVE! Once you are prepared for the session, there is nothing to worry about. Things come up and I am totally flexible to work with you! I’m looking forward to meeting you soon. :)

Children's Spring Mini Session for Easter!

Spring photo with my preset

For this Spring children’s mini session, I wanted to advertise the images without my preset on them! I usually share my images with clients in both a classic look and with my preset on them. You’ll see the classic look with rich colors below!

I wanted to really make these session full of flowers and have that Spring feeling! The gardening theme totally stuck with me. I think of it as the gardeners preparing to sell their flowers at a flower market! You’ll see a small wheelbarrow I painted white, faux flowers, a watering can and gardening tools.

This session can easily turn into an Easter session by adding in the kids with Easter baskets filled with eggs or adding in some bunny ears!

Here is the link to sign up for a 10 minute mini session!

Spring Mini Session Coming Soon!

Last year I took photos of our family at one of the most beautiful nature area in Walnut Creek! I can’t disclose the specific location upon the neighborhood’s request, but if you’re reserving a mini session with me, you’ll get the inside scoop!

The abundance of wildflowers and feeling of spring is magical. I was originally hoping to bring kittens or a bunny rabbit here to take photos with, but I realize the animals could run away most likely! I’m thinking to make this a flower market. More photos and inspiration is coming soon!

For now, contact me to reserve your mini session!

My Family Fall Photos

It’s finally Fall and the time for taking family photos! I’ve been offering mini sessions at a special rate, hope you didn’t miss out on the photoshoot deal!

Thankfully my own family could get our family photos taken as well. I absolutely love our backyard in Martinez and wanted to take photos in a place that could represent home.

I made a reel on Instagram about what to wear for a family photoshoot and featured some of Janie and Jack’s clothing for kids. I adore their little outfits that help me easily coordinate colors. The key points are to choose a color palette of maybe 3-4 colors and ones that will match your home decor or the color palette of your household.

Family photos don’t always go as planned. Believe it or not, I actually love and appreciate the candid or real moments that truly represent me and my family. It’s not easy getting everyone together for a photoshoot and expecting the kid’s to be on their best behavior or smile for all the posed photos.

What matters at the end of the day is that we prepared as best we could, are having fun, and remembering the happy moments.

Hope you enjoy these photos of my family and I! Photo credit goes to my sister Sophia. :)

With that being said, I’ll pose and direct you as well so that we capture the best photos.

Aside from having photos of the two of you, this session is when we really get to know each other, and you can get a feel for what it’s like to work with me if you choose me for your wedding photographer. It’s the perfect way for us to learn a lot about each other’s personalities. It’s amazing how much of a difference this makes on the wedding day.

FAQ

What time is our session?

Lighting is the most important element in creating breathtaking photos! The best outdoor light is at sunrise + one hour before sunset! So ideally we’ll be shooting in the last hour before sunset!

Where will we go?

The location of your session depends on the kind of vibe you’d like for your photos! If lighting is the number one factor for great photos, location is probably the second! I do most of my sessions outdoors, but the main thing is finding a beautiful spot where you feel comfortable to hang out and take some great photos. Here is a blog post I created that lists some locations we can take photos at in the San Francisco bay area!

What should we wear?

Great question! The third principle to get beautiful photos is to love what you are wearing. I have some separate tips for him and her, but the main points are:

- Aim for neutral colors / pastels

- Layers are your friend! They add interest and texture to your photos

- Avoid anything with intense patterns.

- Most of all, aim for clothing that fits you well and matches the location.

When will I receive my photos?

Editing time will vary depending on the time of year. Generally though, my delivery time is within a few days to a week.

Outfits for Her

Like the location, your outfits should also be a reflection of you.

With that being said, there are some simple tips to make sure you choose your best look!

1) Try to stick with outfits that are timeless, beautiful and classic. You want to admire and display these photos for years to come, so aim for looks that will stand the test of time.

2) Clothing movement is also a huge factor in creating romance and drama in your photos – dresses, flowy shawls etc are fantastic. If your shoes are a little hard to walk in, bring along a pair of flats so you can get around to different locations with ease.

3) Try including some accessories – a simple necklace, floppy rimmed hat, a set of bracelets etc. Aim to add some layers that make your look just a little more stylish.

All these things work together to create a look that is both timeless and beautiful!

Outfits for Him

For guys, it’s always better to err on the side of overdressed.

1) Aim for layers as this goes a long way to making an outfit feel more fashionable.

2) Do your best to add some accessories for interest. Glasses, a watch, or jewelry etc.

3) If you like, bring a blazer for a more dressed up look.

4) Avoid baggy jeans, unfitted shirts, polos, running shoes or t-shirts with prints.

5) Cut your hair if you wish, however make sure you do it at LEAST 3-4 days in advance, so the hair has time to blend a bit.

If you have any questions or need some help deciding on options I’m happy to help!

That’s it!

Once you’ve planned out your location, lighting and wardrobe, all that remains is to get together and have a great time!

This Style guide was written to give a few tips to help plan for our session together, but it’s in no way a rule book. It’s just a few pointers to help you in the right direction make sure you’re ready for an awesome photoshoot in the San Francisco bay area.

Engagement sessions are FUN - No need to be nervous. You can even make a date out of it; go out to dinner or a movie afterwards.

Come ready to be affectionate, laugh, and have a great time. When it gets right down to it, this is YOUR session. Make it personal. Make it about YOU, and HAVE FUN.
